What is Wellness Coaching?The concept of using various methods to ensure an individual’s physical, spiritual and emotional wellbeing has been used by many cultures for centuries. These methods might not have been referred to as wellness, and the people administering these techniques and methods most likely were not referred to as wellness coaches, but these various healers were, in some way, a coach to those in need and those they helped they helped. However, the concept of wellness coaching specifically is a fairly new field that began about 30 years ago and started to gain significant traction in the early 1990’s and is widely supported and used today. A psychologist named Judd Allen, PhD and a board member of the National Wellness Institute defined wellness as: “a process of becoming aware of making choices toward a more successful existence.” This definition was a result of a survey Allan conducted of wellness experts that when asked to define wellness, unanimously agreed on the following:
